Screw it, let’s do it..

It is often said that ‘The first impression is the last impression’ but I would tweak this a little and put it as ‘The first impression is the lasting impression’.

My first few weeks at SutraHR have been really adventurous and would last in my memory for many many years to come. I remember the date pretty well – It was November 10, 2008. I entered the office for the first time. A start-up office near Aadarsh Nagar with 6 chairs and 4 computers. The environment seamed to be pretty chilled out. It was just Me and Waqar (CEO-SutraHR) to start off with. Coming from an MNC, I was sure that my first day would be only training and battling the computer screen with sleepy eyes. But that was not the case. Waqar introduced me to my work, shared his knowledge about the market and there I was ready to roll the ball. My first assignment was eagerly waiting for me, within the first 3 hours of my tenure at SutraHR!!

Screw it, let's do it

From that first assignment to where I am right now, writing this post, there are a lot of things I have learned and experienced. Few of them are:

a) No spoon-feeding. Hard work or should I say Smart work is the key to success.

b) Get the things done. No room for laze. As Richard Branson has titled one of his very famous books “Screw it, let’s do it!!” - That should be the attitude at Sutra HR

c) Enjoy your work. Don’t enforce the work on you, but enjoy it to the core.

d) Be proactive and honest in what ever you do, and success would follow you till the end.

Just imagine all this, plus

a) Eating pizzas/subs for lunch

b) Having toast/chai for evening snack

c) Having loooooong sessions of pool/snooker after work

d) Gossiping over the daily happenings around the city during work hours

and much more…..

So you see it has been a perfect blend of work with fun or should I reframe it as “Fun with Work”.

We always read articles posted by the big guns viz CEOs, Founders, Entrepreneurs of the huge companies – Yahoo, Mastek, Infosys etc quoting that they had to go through a lot of sweat to get their company to a position to where it is right now. They started off in a small room with minimum funding and most minuscule employment. Slowly built on it for years to come and now they are highest on the chart. After reading this we often wonder

1) How would it feel like to be a part of such an environment?

2) How did these guys manage to bring the company to such great heights?

3) Do they have a secret formula or is it all luck?

Well even I wouldn’t be able to answer these at the moment, but one thing is for sure

I am a part of a company which has started with 4 people in a small room and we are aiming to be the best in the years to come with our hard work and ‘screw it, let’s do it’ attitude. :-)

  1. U know… for some reason I always believe that idea comes first.. then the people to work on it.. then the company happens.. then the people come in again.. then the money.. then the fame.. and then comes in the story..the success story..

I find it hard to believe that every company has a story to tell.. how can it be impossible that any company u come across has a beautiful awe inspiring story..

Good luck to u guys for building ur story..(i say might as well start working on that story board real soon.. u might not have time later hehe)

  3. The reason behind successful companies is the “purpose” of the company’s existence. Why does your company exist?
Its a mission that needs to be conveyed to all team members.

    Cheers,

I agree, that brings a question to my mind whether every Startup should have a mission statement?.

By waqar azmi on Dec 10, 2008

  5. I believe more than the mission statement Sahil is talking about the Mantra behind the company, the purpose of our existence, that one thing without which the world will be a lesser place…. :)

  6. “Screw IT, let’s do IT”..yes… thats the way IT shud be… but always keep one thing in mind that “whatever u do it shud be for the benefit of others”… this way start-ups turn into biggies… and after turning into biggies u have to keep one thing in mind and that is… “whatever you do it shud be for the benefit of others”… :) … yes WHETHER UR A START-UP OR A BIGGIE .. DO IT FOR OTHERS AND SUCCESS IS NOT FAR !!.. trust me IT works after all IT DOES MATTER(S) ;) … best of luck …

    @Sandeep

Thanks dude for your best wishes.. You are absolutely right when you say - that it does matter. But then don’t you think it the people behind the scenes who make it matter and Sutra HR is one of the chosen ones.. ;)

  9. @all…

please respect IT by writing “it” in CAPS when u say it incontext with the company… ;)

    @Kartik…

  12. Kartik,

Welcome to the world of blogging. Its a great post that you’ve written here.

Most of all, what’s important for a start-up are a group of smart, hardworking, enthusiastic people who pride in what they do and are not ready to hear NO for an answer.

I am glad to see that the Sutra Team is shaping into that strong team that will hear NO for an answer and pave the path to success, come what may!

    Kudos!
